Subjects Taught

I left school in 1997 with 9 GCSE's. After my school unfortunately shut down soon after this I was unable to do any post GCSE education there. I decided that instead of A Levels I would do an A Level equivalent in Child Development, teaching me the developmental process of a child from birth - 8 years, enabling me the beginning knowledge and understanding that fascinated me into developing a more thorough learning into the overall development of the young child.

After gaining my certifcate in childcare and development (the equivalent of an NVQ Level 2) I decided to focus my new found knowledge in the classroom so I achieved a job as a classroom assistant within a reception role. it was here I was able to put some theory into practice as I worked alongside the teacher, learning the routine of an early years setting, which started my fascination of young children's speaking and listening with then grows to reading. After a year here, as I was still only 19 I took some time off to travel. From here I worked with a temping agency, working in different schools in London from Nursery - Year 6. I then got a job in my previous school in North London where I was there for 7 years, starting as a teaching assistant in Reception again, I worked my way around different year groups and key stages, learning the schemes of work and assisting the teacher throughout many areas of the curriculum, with specific reference to reading. I decided that I wanted to train to be a teacher as I had so much valid experience within the classroom. I went on to complete my Bachelor of Education degree at the Institute of Education which covered all areas of educational theory, learning theorist approaches, and enabling me to put research into practice in the classroom. My long research project was based on phonics and comprehension, which enabled me to research in great depth, early literacy instruction and the benefit of phonics instructiion to children. This also taught me the benefit of early literacy and comprehension with the overall curriculum. I have taught many children privately over the years, them achieving greater results in tests and a positive attitude towards learning.

A childhood passion of mine is drama and if I hadn't decided to turn my talent to teaching I definitely would have trained to be an actress. Unfortunately this could not be a career, but I still carry on my love of drama by joining amateur dramatic groups and also applying my knowledge to the classroom by introducing drama across the curriculum to encourage self esteem and to add a sense of fun to the more challenging of lessons. I ran an after school drama club which proved to be very popular, and for this wrote and directed many children's short plays which proved to be successful. I am a keen sports player and keep fit and active. I love to read and am a member of a book club and library.
